My Students
I am spending my second year teaching online with 45 of the most creative, talkative, and energetic third grade kiddos I have ever met. My kiddos are almost entirely from East Africa, and either their parents or the kids themselves are immigrants. Since this is the case, many of my students are SLIFE (Students with Limited or Interrupted Formal Education), and most are English Language Learners. These kids are full of questions, and I love working hard to answer them each day.
Every day, I have a moment, or several, that remind me exactly why I chose to become a teacher.
My kids are worth every late night, early morning, and the extra little gift I can find them.
These students have opened my heart to what I can do for them and the joy I share with them every time they succeed. Recently, we learned about text structures and text features. Nothing has made my heart happier than when my students come to me, eyes wide and excited when the book they chose from the class library had one of the features we have learned.
My students deserve the best, and that is what I want to give them!
My Project
I love teaching reading. Part of the reason is I love books. I also love sharing those books and that love with my students. I love sharing the excitement I get when I find a book or a series I love, or a genre that excites me! I love experiencing this joy along with my students, and I hope to do that, even when we are at a distance.
Comic books are the perfect way to bridge a divide between excited and reluctant readers.
My students last year would pick up graphic novels and comic books without hesitation, and I struggled to keep enough of them in my classroom library! I love teaching reluctant readers about these types of books! Many of my students simply need to see the action and use the pictures to guide their reading. I think comic books and graphic novels scaffold themselves, and they teach valuable reading skills. I hope to add these to the library in my classroom and to share this library with my students.
