My Students
Jersey City, NJ is one of the most diverse cities in the country. The population at Academy 1 is a reflection of that diversity. Our diversity is something that we are proud of, and that pride is something we aim to instill in our students the moment they walk in the door.
As 7th and 8th graders, my students are developing all the skills they'll need for high school.
It is my goal to promote Jersey City pride in them and establish those necessary study habits to foster success.
My Project
My students claim to hate reading and I aim to prove them wrong. The graphic novels and comic books I have requested are fun, contemporary and engaging. The cast of characters within these comics and YA novels is diverse, much like the student body I teach; and the issues and conflicts detailed in these stories are ones my students can relate to. Contemporary comics more than any other literary genre make a point of casting people of color, LGBTQ characters, and religious minorities. The new Archie series has a Riverdale High that looks like my school, and Ms. Marvel is a Jersey City Muslim American.
By funding this project, you are ensuring that my students gain access to stories that celebrate diversity and promote respect across cultures.
Comic books and YA novels are tackling adolescent issues my kids face every day, and students often relate to these works far more than they do the texts offered in our district curriculum.
