My students claim to hate reading and I aim to prove them wrong. The graphic novels and comic books I have requested are fun, contemporary and engaging. The cast of characters within these comics is diverse, much like the student body I teach; and the issues and conflicts detailed in these stories are ones my students can relate to. Contemporary comics more than any other literary genre make a point of casting people of color, LGBTQ characters, and religious minorities. The new Archie series has a Riverdale High that looks like my school, and Ms. Marvel is a Jersey City Muslim American. Comic books and graphic novels promote literacy and reignite a love for reading. Providing my students with more reading options with characters they can relate to will increase their interest in language arts and will strengthen their reading comprehension in all subject areas.
