Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The books featured in this project are destined for approximately 600 kids in 3rd through 7th grade. They are students at a K-8 center in South Florida. I run the school library. About 84% of my library patrons come from households with below average income. The kids tend to be first-generation Americans whose parents have recently arrived in the U.S. from the Caribbean, or from Central or South America. The children don't have access to a lot of juvenile literature at home.

We need comic books, Japanese and home-grown, for 8 to 14 year-old students: you should see our kids with these books - they don't read them; they devour them!

My Project

The Japanese titles include the classic 'Spirited Away' plus, from the same author, 'Ponyo' and the 'My Neighbor Totoro' series. The American titles are 'Crush', the latest in the Berrybrook Middle School saga (very popular with our kids) and a new collection of Raina Telgmeier graphic novels (the must-read books in the library at the moment). I'll tell you exactly what will happen to these books. It's the same process whenever new comics arrive. The fifth graders and the sixth graders will spot me processing the new arrivals - putting on barcodes, spine labels etc. They'll return throughout the day to check if the books are ready. Within an hour or two of me finishing the processing, they will have snapped up all the new titles. Within a month, older middle schoolers will start to check out the books. Finally, during the next academic year, the craze somehow spreads down to the younger kids. The books become fashionable all over again among the third and fourth grade students.

Comic books are the best way to boost literacy among my students.

They generate huge excitement among the kids. Please help our school library keep our Comics Section up to scratch by offering our children these great Japanese and American titles!
