This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I teach two sections of 5th grade Language Arts in a high-need, urban charter school. We hold our students to very rigorous standards, which in turn helps them consistently out-perform the other neighborhood schools. I am so proud of my students because they work extremely hard, even in the face of enormous difficulties.
Most importantly, my students absolutely LOVE to read. They devour books and can't wait to tell me what they just read. I recently introduced my students to some graphic novels I had won during a book fair raffle, and pretty soon every student was asking me if I had any more of those types of books!
I would love to be able to bring some more diversity of genres into our classroom library. The graphic novels will definitely pique all of my students' interests, and push their thinking about traditional literature. Reading graphic novels requires the use of many different reading strategies, such as making inferences, comparing and contrasting and analyzing characters, so these books will be a valuable teaching too, as well. My students will be able to compare standard classics to the graphic novel form, and they will discover that Shakespeare is accessible, even to fifth graders! I can already picture the great discussions my students will have about the complex elements found in graphic novels.

You will make it possible for my students to engage in deep conversations about literature and even begin reading Shakespeare in elementary school!
