My Students

My 6th grade English/Language Arts are awesome! Unfortunately, many come from impoverished homes, but they LOVE learning. My students have a very wide range of reading levels so, my classroom must cater to their different needs.

6th graders want to learn and achieve.

I teach about 90 students. Of those 90 students, approximately 60% live in poverty, 17% have a learning disability, and 15% are served in gifted and talented programs. The diversity of my students calls for daily differentiation in my classroom.

My Project

Students can concentrate better on reading and learning when their bodies aren't distracting them. Some 6th grades need to move constantly to focus; others need a comfy place to relax. They all need easy access to books.

My goal is to foster a love of reading within my classroom; plenty of books and a variety of seating options are some of the best ways to do just that.

In Nancie Atwell's book "The Reading Zone," she describes what students need and how she accommodates their needs: "Young readers find that psychological comfort is easier to achieve when they're physically comfortable; hence the vinyl-covered beanbags...and cushions that my students sprawl on as they read" (24).

According to Donalyn Miller, known as the "The Book Whisperer," "study after study confirm the report findings that access to books in the classroom results in increased motivation and reading achievement" (Reading in the Wild, 80).

Middle school students want to learn and all have the ability to learn, but need a different environment to learn than you and I most likely learned.

By funding my project, you'd be giving my students the opportunity to choose where and how they learn within my classroom. The funds would go towards more comfortable seating and many more books for my classroom library.
