Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 2nd grade students are an energetic, bright, creative bunch of kids. They love to move, make, and explore. Our classroom is a welcoming place where we are safe, silly, and excited to learn! My students represent Taos, a multicultural (Native American, Spanish, Anglo and more) area steeped in tradition, art, and connection to nature. Taos is a low income community, but rich in so many important ways.
My kids love learning through doing: movement, art, experimenting, storytelling, and play.
One of the many examples of their abilities are the incredible plays that they wrote and performed last year. They each created a giant mask (see our class picture!) for their character, which made their performance that much more amazing! My challenge as their teacher is to provide a variety of opportunities for these young kids to explore possibilities and work toward success as I can.
My Project
Every summer provides opportunity to reflect on what will make the next year more successful and enjoyable for all of my students. In thinking about the year to come, two of the big goals that stand out are incorporating more educational play into our busy schedule and to providing more cozy reading spots to help foster that love of reading time. I always observe and get to know my incoming class as much as I can, and this new group is a sweet, social, and creative bunch that has come so far with their reading skills in this last year school.
I want to provide my students with hands on steam and literacy challenges for our morning welcome work and cozy reading spots for library time.
In lieu of the traditional, individual welcome work assignments, I want to provide this group of kiddos with hands on and interactive math, science, art, and literacy activities. Kids learn by playing, doing, and social interactions. Our new "Good Morning Tubs" will offer a variety of choices that will be a fun and stimulating start to the day. I've ordered exciting new games and activities as well as the all-important bins to organize.
My students have always loved our classroom library. We have a beautiful selection of books for all reading levels and interests. One of the most important values that I want to pass on to my students is a love of reading. Our 2nd grade library needs special, comfortable reading spots. To help make this a reality, I would like to construct a comfy reading bench and floor lounge. With the help of this Donors Choose project, I'm excited to make our classroom even more organized, fun, and inviting!
