The majority of my students come from military families and they are dropped off at school about an hour before school starts due to their parent's work schedule. Students love to come in and read, work on homework, and get tutoring in the morning. Additionally, many students spend their lunch and recess in my classroom so they can do these activities as well. But what we're lacking is a space for students to feel energized and comfortable in those times when taking a break is healthy!
My Project
I am trying to fill my classroom with items that will make everyday activities comfortable, enjoyable, and fun! I am trying to create a reading corner to encourage reading in and out of the classroom!
Two chairs and a small table will look nice and feel relaxing to students who are looking for an escape through literature.
I am also looking to stock up on simple everyday classroom supplies (scissors, glue, markers). The clipboards are for our Socratic seminars! When we are able to go outside, in the library, or even in our classroom, we need to push the tables aside and still have support for notetaking.
In addition, our teacher's lounge has nothing but retired furniture in it. Anytime something is too old or slightly broken, the item usually moves from the classroom to the lounge, leaving teachers a dirty and worn out space during lunch and/or planning.
Students are always our first priority. We work tireless hours creating lessons, giving effective feedback, and communicating with families. We all know teachers work very hard with little pay and appreciation. I would love to create a warm and productive workspace for our staff so we can feel energized and happy when returning to our students! In order to do this, we would need a small cart for a coffee machine, some storage in the two connecting bathrooms for those emergency days(!) and seating for teachers to sit down and collaborate.
Please help our physical environment improve and feel productive!!!
