My students are a diverse bunch. They come in to 3rd grade with all learning styles and all different levels, but at the end of third grade they all have something in common and that's a love for reading. To fire their imaginations, I love to have books of all genres.... from fantasy to non-fiction, and everything in between.
This is a fundamental year when students have needs across many aspects of literacy.
Some might struggle with reading words but have background knowledge and tools for constructing meaning, others can be relatively strong in reading words and tools for constructing meaning but lack academic vocabulary and background knowledge. Then there are some students who are hampered by poor reading fluency. Student engagement is a top priority and that is the reason we need books, books, and more books. My library needs some help.
My Project
By donating to this project you will be providing books for the classroom reading center. These books will be used for independent reading, for literature circles, reading to each other, and more importantly, these books will help my students learn to love and appreciate good literature. This reading time is absolutely imperative to great literacy development, and this, in turn, will help in developing excellence in my students' ability to write creatively.
Sets of books like Because of Winn Dixie and James and the Giant Peach, will also be used in the guided reading center.
This is where the teacher works with small groups of students to help with specific reading and comprehension skills.
