My Students

2nd Graders have just begun to get their feet wet when it comes to getting into a really good book that they can't put down. My second graders are ready to build their reading stamina as they dive into new and exciting books everyday! They are sponges waiting to absorb every piece of information.

My students are excited to read!

At 2nd grade, students are introduced to chapter books with more complex plots and multifaceted characters that are just begging to be read. They love to draw pictures, read books, tell jokes and play video games. These students come from a variety of backgrounds and homes. Many come from refugee or single parent families and several of them are learning English as their second language. There are even a few with learning disabilities and emotional or behavior issues. Our classroom is an equal playing field where all students have the opportunity to feel safe, have fun and learn with their peers. At our school we believe that all students are capable of success, no matter the obstacles they face. In addition to shaping well-rounded people, we are committed to high-quality instruction for every child, every day in every classroom.

My Project

As my second graders grow their reading stamina this year I want to give them a place where they can cozy-up with a good book. Whether that is lounging on the rug in our library area or taking a pillow, bean bag, or squishy cushion seat to a favorite place in the classroom. I want them to feel like they are in their "happy place" when they pick up that book that they are just dying to read and get comfy in our classroom. Having the mobile seating allows the kids to move about the classroom to find their independent reading area free from distraction so they can really concentrate on what they need to be doing....READING!!

Everyone of my students' home lives vary.

Some have that quiet spot that they can go to and read and some do not. Whether they have a comfy, cozy, and quiet reading spot or not I want to make our classroom some place that they can enjoy reading to the fullest! Having the space and time to grow their love for reading will help them to nurture that desire to keep growing as readers as they move onto upper grades and onto their future careers.
