This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Most of my Kindergarten students have endured severe trauma in their short life before they enter my classroom. As a result of this, their mental health is severely impacted. My students seek attention by having emotional outbursts, physical aggression towards others, damaging property and become defiant towards adults to name a few. As their teacher it is my job to create a safe learning environment for my students.
As I implement Social Emotional Learning in my classroom, I teach students different strategies so that they are able to regulate their emotions, build relationships with classmates, and make responsible choices.
I also teach students breathing techniques.
The goal for this project is to create a safe place in the classroom where students can go to calm down, self regulate their emotions, and refocus. The items I am requesting are going to help me create a calming corner in the classroom for students to visit when their emotions are high. The quiet corner will have soft furnishings, and soothing materials to help students de-escalate when they get upset. My students are sweet and smart and have become better at using their words instead of their hands to resolve a problem. This project will greatly benefit them because they will be able to put into practice what I have taught them. This safe space will allow students to take a break and regulate their emotions as needed. The calming corner will empower my students to take responsibility of their actions and show them that I care about them and that I validate their feelings.
