Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Research shows that creating a fun and welcoming environment for students to learn in noticeably improves attendance rates and the positive feelings students have toward coming to school each day. Much of that environment is created by the teacher's behavior and attitude, but the physical environment is not to be overlooked! I am seeking to create the best possible environment that I can for my students to learn!

My students are a fantastic group of 5th graders who live and learn in a high poverty, and often high crime area of Chicago.

School is the place where they can come to be at ease and have their basic needs met if they do not get that at home. My goal for this project is to improve comfortable seating, and thus student engagement and attendance!

My Project

Students spend a lot of work time in their desks because we do not have other seating options. Students will be more engaged, and our classroom will more inviting to students with pillows and soft seating.

These flexible seating materials will transform our library and our center time to be more engaging and comfortable for students!

Pillows and pillow chairs will provide students with seating options and the ability to move around the classroom when completing their work and working in their centers. Furthermore, students will be more excited about their literacy and center time with cozy places to sit!
