Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from a struggling, high needs, urban neighborhood in New York City. Our school is a warm, nurturing environment, and the children enjoy coming to school. I am currently teaching 18 lovable preschoolers who are curious, funny, loving, and eager to learn. The parents of our students are working hard to make a better life for their families and desire a stellar education for their children.

My little ones are curious, imaginative, loving, creative, honest, and cute.

The community is diverse and considerably lower income. The children I teach are all eager to learn and are enthusiastic. My classroom is comprised of children who are learning English and also with children who have different abilities.

My Project

The preschool curriculum in our high-need community includes hands-on, exciting activities, in which the children are actively engaged in learning. Children who chronically fail to get enough rest do not learn as well as better-rested children. We need comfy flannel blankets to put on our mats to help us rest.

Our four year olds are very busy...moving from one activity to the next with high amounts of energy!

In many cases, overtired children resort to hyperactivity and difficult behavior, as a way of fighting off exhaustion. Rest not only promotes alertness, but will make the children less moody. We have new mats but are in need of comfy blankets. I believe that this will really help the children rest and give them a sense of security. After a busy morning, the children are ready to relax after lunch. I have lullaby and classical music CDs I play and stuffed animals to cuddle. Some children actually sleep during this time while others may just rest their bodies and brains to recharge for the remainder of the day!

Young children may face challenges in education and in their lives.

Children need rest in order to complete a full day of preschool. Rest is a vital need, essential to a child's health and growth. Rest time is also a good time for children to look at books, listen to music, or spend some one-on-one time with me or my assistant. Each child will have a their own blankie and this will give them a feeling of ownership. Please help us in our endeavor!
