As a teacher in a special education classroom, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, the students in my classroom are students with learning and emotional disabilities. My students are located in an urban school. I teach students in grades PK-5. All of the students qualify for 100% free breakfast/ lunch. We are an ethnically diverse school with a variety of cultures. My students have a wide range of academic skills.
I want to make sure to create a cozy environment to foster that learning. To make our reading corner inviting I am also asking for a rug that students could sit on as an alternative to sitting in a chair. The ground is a cold tile, and the carpet would help make the space more inviting. As this is a classroom for students with mild/moderate disabilities, they also have sensory needs. While we are addressing those with the flexible seating. The students need flexible seating, different ways to collaborate, and a cozy spot to work individually. My students will learn that a classroom doesn't have to be a boring, uncomfortable, inflexible four walled room.
