My students are enthusiastic learners and caring community members. These amazing fourth graders love having choice in their learning and being able to move around in our flexible seating classroom. Being a part of a STEM school gives my students so many opportunities to put their learning into practice in unique, real-world ways.
My students strive to do their best, achieve their goals, and make a difference both in and out of our school.
Many of my students have already faced so much adversity in their lives and thrive as members of our classroom family.
My Project
In our classroom, my students pick their seat every day. This choice enables students to better understanding their learning styles and collaboration habits. They are learning what works best for them and how to advocate for themselves. So far, we have benches, bouncy exercise balls, a bean bag chair, wobble stools, school chairs, firm stools, and high counter stools. The students have options of standing, lounging, sitting, or doing some combination of the three while they work. I am so fortunate to have gotten items for flexible seating choices funded through Donor's Choose - but I have had to put in a lot of my own money to give the students the best possible educational environment. These chairs from Lakeshore are in our school library and my students just love them - they call them the "Dream Chairs" because they adjust to fit different students' needs. I would so appreciate your help in bringing four of these chairs into our classroom. I can't wait to see their faces and hear their excited voices when they see Dream Chairs for them to use too!
Reading a book in book clubs allows for students to connect through and beyond the text.
Having a class set will let each child use a book of their own that they are able to read and interact with. Reading together creates memories that last a lifetime and greatly impact a student's view of themselves as a learner. The class set of the Louis Sachar book "Holes" will be a wonderful, meaningful addition to our language arts curriculum. My students have laughed the whole way through our read aloud of "Wayside School" by this author and I know they will love getting to read another book by him in a book club.
