Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our music room is a safe and fun place where my students make music together. They walk into the room, I grab my ukulele, and we sing hello to each other. Despite challenges they might have, I want my students to find comfort in music.
I teach every class in our school from pre-kindergarten to 5th grade, nearly a total of 500 students, at a Title I elementary school in Washington Heights in Manhattan, New York City.
Many of my students come from a Hispanic background. For most of them, our music class is the only opportunity for their music lessons. Therefore, I want to make our time together as meaningful as possible.
Our school maintains relatively small class sizes, and that enables teachers to give more-tailored instructions, but this is a factor which contributes to a tight budget. In addition, a lot of students come from low-income families. Nevertheless, I am determined to do my best not to let those factors stand in the way of my students getting the resources they deserve. Our school provides a safe learning environment for our students, and I will do my best to provide them with the right tools and opportunities.
My Project
"Criss-cross Applesauce," "Sit Like a Pretzel" These are often the words that you would hear at an elementary school when a teacher is asking students to sit with their legs crossed on the floor. This sitting style, often called Indian style, is particularly common among lower grade students. It prevents students from kicking other students and at the same time enables to place a relatively large number of students on a rug. However, the truth is that I do not find it comfortable at all. I do not believe students are comfortable sitting this way either. Therefore, I have been looking into different ways that my students can sit on the rug/floor during mini-lessons and activities.
I believe that Soft Seats will bring a comfortable seating option for my students; with Soft Seats, my students do not have to stay on the crowded rug as long as they respect each other's space.
A crowded rug often leads to distractions. With a clear and comfortable spot to sit on, my students will sit or even lay down during various activities. Flexible seating is a new trend in many schools, and I believe in giving more seating/standing options when learning since we all are different.
I was fortunate enough to have another project funded recently thanks to our generous supporters, and therefore, upper grade students will soon have new stools as their seating options. With Soft Seats on the floor, my lower grade students will benefit hugely. I feel that a comfortable seating option is such an essential part of a learning environment, and I hope to bring this project to life with your support. Thank you for coming to our page and reading our story.
