This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I work with an amazing group of scholars who have high aspirations of success. My scholars are at a high poverty school and are trying to do everything they can to overcome their environment. We are starting a new chapter at our school and want to help our scholars to get a head start in their education through quality materials and hard work. We have also made a dramatic shift into a more collaborative classroom.
My scholars deserve seating that is comfortable, flexible, and relevant to learning.
We all know that if you're not comfortable, your brain just does not work. My students are relentless in their desire to succeed. Many would say they see a way to better their lives, and they are running for it. Through collaborative learning groups, my students can achieve more in-depth learning.
My school consists of 97.3% African-American students, many coming from poverty. We have encouraged our scholars to achieve and will be offering opportunities to take the CLEP test for many of my seniors. All of this leads to them having a head start on college.
My Project
With the tables and chairs requested, my students will be able to be placed into cooperative learning groups that will better accommodate collaborative learning. Using these tables, my scholars will easily be able to work on projects, lab analysis, STEM assignments, research, and peer tutoring. Research has shown that the amount of learning significantly increases when students work together in a constructive way. With traditional desks, this is very hard since most desks do not fit together easily and are often times different shapes and sizes.
With kidney-shaped tables for my scholars' collaborative groups, it will also be easy for me to check on their progress anytime they are working.
This is essential for ensuring that students are working on classwork and not just socializing. Collaborative groups are the future of education. Collaboration skills are job skills that students need to develop now. With this project, my scholars will develop better communication, stronger problem solving skills, and teamwork. All of these areas are needed to be successful in the future!
