My students face a lot challenges academically and personally and often don't have a consistent support system outside of school. Things such as homelessness, teen pregnancy, and mental health concerns have impacted their focus on learning. They come to school, which is an alternative setting, as a last resort to earn their high school diploma. Once they are here they respond positively to the smaller, more family oriented setting we offer. Together, we form a bond, we become family and they transform. They begin to see value in a quality education they purposefully took part in.
Many of them emerge as leaders.
Where they didn’t see any further education or future, prior to coming here, they begin to formulate goals and pursue college and career opportunities they previously thought impossible.
My Project
All over classrooms have begun moving towards flexible seating to provide students choice and safety while in the classroom. I am working on transitioning my classroom to being fully flexible and I would like to offer comfortable, plush bean bag chairs for student seating throughout the room.
Many of my students excel while in the alternative setting, so why not offer them alternative seating?
I provide an environment of high structure, paired with high support. I firmly believe by offering my students more comfortable seating options their sense of safety increases, allowing them the optimal environment for their learning to flourish.
