My Project
My first grade students are smart, energetic, and fun! Unfortunately, several of these kids still carry stress from their parents losing jobs during the pandemic, and continue to have socioeconomic challenges. Some worry about relatives that have continuing health issues due to Covid-19, and some struggle with abuse in the home. I hope we can join together to help my students have less stress and to cultivate a safe, relaxing place for them to focus and learn. I want to promote healthy Social Emotional Learning by working on students' self-awareness, social awareness, self-management skills, interpersonal skills, and responsible decision making. As they develop these skills, our classroom will grow one step closer to being a community.
Students are much more productive, have better behavior, and enjoy learning when they're in a comfortable environment.
I would love to give my first graders a choice of how they'd feel most comfortable during teaching time, as many can't sit very long before they get antsy. Wobble stools, fidget chair bands, and wobble cushions will all help them get their wiggles out while we learn together. When it's time to do independent work, like reading or writing, their options will be cozy area rugs, bean bags, floor rockers, padded lap desks, or surf portable lap desks.
I envision many more group projects and partner readings in our future due to the inviting atmosphere we will hopefully be able to create in our classroom. Help me foster a greater love of reading and learning in my classroom by donating to this project.
