Comfortable Safe Space in a Flexible Classroom Setting
Help me give my students a comfortable "safe area" with a carpet where they can lay down and relax or read a book while the "Code" drill experience can become a better experience for all my students.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My classroom is a combined class, with flexible seating. During the morning hours Second and Third graders students come in, while the Fourth and Fifth graders students work in it after lunch. This space is more than a classroom to them. They work in it for four years, while they navigate through their elementary school program. Students feel the room belongs to them, daily they will walk in before class, just to talk, play or read.
I teach in a Title 1 school in Miami Beach.
My students are from underprivileged households, mostly non-English speakers. They are passionate about school, they have a great attitude towards learning.
My Project
Each month we have mandatory "Code Yellow/Red " drills which require the children to quickly move to the designated "Hard Corner" area in the classroom. Whenever a "Code" is announced, whether a drill or active, the students must leave their educational learning and reach the "Hard Corner" area. An alarm system is activated, and students with different abilities find hard to react to this.
Some of my youngest students respond to Code Reds with fear, emotional outbursts and, in some cases physical difficulties.
Students must remain quiet during this time, which is very difficult when they are crying.
Providing a comforting and peaceful "Hard Corner" area, with a beautiful rug, will help calm students down and bring peace. With your help, I want to create a peaceful "Hard Corner" area that will also become our "Happy Place" where stars continue to shine!
