My students need a comfortable place in the classroom where everyone can come together. I will be teaching second grade this year!
Having a rug will allow the students to feel more at home when they are reading, so that they will want to keep reading.
I would like to incorporate a variety of learning strategies, group work and alternative learning options to ensure that each student's needs are met! The second graders of this Chicago school are made up of diverse learners, English language learners, and come from varied family situations (low-income, single parent).
I like to gather my students on the carpet where it's easier to hear everyone, and feels like a community. The meeting area is more productive, engaging, and more effective for whole class instruction. Students learn to consider each other’s work, and problem solve together. We can easily sit in a circle so that they can make eye contact and listen more actively to one another in a group.
My students will be able to sit on the rug when I read out loud to them, as well as when working on reading (Daily 5) and writing.
My class will be able to sit on a comfortable rug, which will add to engagement in all subject areas.
