Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My geometry classroom is a place of challenge and discovery. Students will spend this year learning the foundation of knowledge and skills they will need to further their high school mathematics education.
My students are 9th graders in a suburban high school near Houston, Texas.
They like to move and love lots of positive attention. Many of them receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status and are labeled at risk. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical". From the moment they enter my classroom, I try to help them forget their daily troubles and work with a growth mindset. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful my students will be successful in high school math classes and their future.
My Project
This generation of student does not learn the way previous generations did. Students now want a say in what happens in the classroom. They want choices when learning a new subject. Implementing these things is my major goal this school year. One way to do this is to offer flexible seating.
Brain-based research shows students who can move and be active while learning will help more synapses fire enabling students to learn more and easier.
Students need to be able to move rather than sitting stagnant in a desk 8 hours a day every day. An easy way to give this to students is by having seats available that encourage movement as well as relaxation for those students who need it. This is accomplished by seating such as the requested stools, wobble chairs, camping disks, and light diffusers. Most kids do not learn by sitting at a desk at home. They learn by lounging in their rooms, on their bed, or on the couch. I would like to mirror that in my classroom this year by giving my students a choice of where and how they can sit.
