Comfortable = Focused: Flexible Seating in the HS Classroom

My students need flexible seating choices like bar stools, tall tables, floor level seating, and lap desks in order to fulfill our goal.

My Students

My English students are amazing and engaged...but we need a more innovative space in which to learn. After extensive research, I have begun the switch to flexible seating. This is beneficial, not only because it makes more room for my students to get around, but it also helps them to learn in a more comfortable environment that helps them stay focused.

I work very hard to make sure my classroom is one that is inviting, and the kids comment on the efforts made, but we just don't have enough room!

There is only so far my small budget (and the school's) can go each year, and I normally spend my classroom funds on books (because they have me for three years, they read through my library very quickly!). My room was originally designed for elementary students in mind, so it is very small. Switching to the two tables and three reading nook chairs has helped make more room, but I still have a ways to go before I can get my classroom to be a true flexible seating environment.

My Project

My students have told me that the changes I have made so far have really helped them in my classroom and it shows.

With the small efforts I have made in converting my classroom to a flexible seating environment, I have seen a marked increase in the focus and learning of my students, but we have a long way to go before it reaches full flexible seating status.

Experimenting with what kinds of environments or seating styles work for them each day helps my kids get the most out of their time in English class. Some students have found that standing at taller tables, or sitting on the floor on cushions with lap desks help them focus more than the traditional desk. They have been really receptive and excited about the changes, and I would love to see them reach their "dream classroom."

I want to make this a success for them so that we can achieve our goals both inside and outside of the classroom, and show them that people other than their parents and I want to see them succeed.
