Comfortable, Creative, and Collaborative Classroom for SPED Math Grades 9-10
Help me give my students more comfort in Algebra and Geometry with math games and tools, comfy seating and lighting, materials for group projects, and fidget bands/tools.
The poster boards, colored tapes, and ribbons will be used in creating a 3-D village for 2 Geometry classes, where they will cut out shapes, fold them together, measure them for area, circumference, or surface area in order to practice finding these measurements.
Math can be trying for most of us, and learning in a comfortable classroom is most helpful to reducing angst and fidgeting.
LED lighting moves us away from harsh fluorescents. Bean bag filler will refill bags that we already have. Balance ball chairs help those who don't enjoy sitting still on a hard chair for 75 minutes per class. Fidget bands allow students to bounce their feet at their chairs to release pent-up energy. Math games make learning fun. I am starting a math club, the students experience learning with others in a lighter atmosphere that is not graded, but is guided with learning expectations.
Class tools needed are reusable folders to lessen paper waste, a HDMI cable that will let me teach from in front of the TV instead of next to it, dry erase towels so our small group board work will not be using so many paper towels, a water jug and cups so students are throwing away plastic water bottles or leaving class often with water requests and missing valuable lesson time. The document cameras allow me to show the students what I am working on and cast it to the TV, without having a large expensive overhead projector. Dry erase gird boards help me quickly shift them from one problem to another without having to draw new grid lines each time.
I work hard at easing their anxiety around math and the more comfortable they are physically and emotionally, the more I can retain their attention and focus mentally.
