The twenty-five children in my kindergarten classroom are sweet, loving kids with lots of energy. They are from many diverse backgrounds including immigrants from other countries, students in foster care, and students who experience homelessness. These students need a lot of structure in the classroom in order for them to learn. Routines must be taught and followed in order for the day to run smoothly because a lot of my kindergarteners do not get this structure at home since they are constantly moving around.
A lot of my kindergartners have never been in a school setting before and need to be taught exactly how to act appropriately in school.
While this is challenging for some, with the right materials and motivational tools, the children are able to follow a routine and learn.
My Project
These materials will make a huge difference in my student's learning because they will be able to find comfort around the classroom. A lot of my students consider their home to be school because they are homeless. I feel my students should be as comfortable as possible when they are learning and this project will help my kindergarteners get fun things for the classroom that other kids may see in their homes.
A lot of my students share rooms with other family members and do not have the chance to just be a kid.
Kinetic sand, Mickey and Minnie Mouse chairs, a Disney rug, and reading pillows are things most five-year-olds get exposure to, but unfortunately, a lot of kids in my classroom don't get that luxury. When they see these familiar characters in school, they get excited and feel welcomed and comfortable.
If my students are given these things, they will be motivated to do academic work like reading and writing. I will use these flexible seating options for both a writing center and a cool down center. Both the writing center and the cooldown center will be a place my students can be alone with their thoughts when they need some time to reconnect. In addition, the center will be a safe place for them to go to especially when things are not going well at home.
