My Students

We have all heard the saying “it takes a village to raise a child”, so today I am asking my online “village” to help educate a classroom. Our sixth grade community is comprised of 80 diverse students, from 10+ countries, with a variety of special needs, and endless amounts of potential.

Even though 59% of my students are English Language Learners and 90% are living in poverty, every single one of my students is ready to take on the world and change it for the better.As a result of their backgrounds, my students are resilient, creative, and ready to enter a global workforce.

At the same time, trauma, violence, and poverty present significant challenges for my students. Despite the barriers they face, my students come to school each day with a dream that is uniquely theirs. My goal is to provide them with the knowledge, skills, tools, and resources they need to make that dream their reality.

My Project

At the heart of our classroom community is our carpet. At the carpet, we gather together to celebrate student growth, set daily goals, reflect on our progress, review important information, and so much more. Unfortunately, my 6th graders are just too big to fit on the classroom rug we have now, which is more suited for Pre-K, so many students end up sitting on the tile floor. Research findings indicate that when students are uncomfortable, they become distracted, and learning is hindered. I know my students are uncomfortable during our class meetings because many ask to stay at their table seats.

Respecting each student's voice and providing them with choice is a core component of my teaching philosophy, so we tried that.

Conducting classroom meetings, in table groups, decreased student engagement and lowered their levels of interaction. My students need comfortable seating options during whole-class instruction, collaboration, and celebrations so they don't have to sit on our laminate flooring.
