Comfortable and Calm to Experience the Power of Stories

Help me give my students a variety of books, sensory items, motivational art and a cozy rug for our classroom to make reading time in our special education classroom more enjoyable and really jumpstart their growing reading skills!

My Project

In our middle school special education language arts classes, my 7th, 8th, and 9th grade students talk about the stories around us. We read every day in our classroom and talk about how important stories are whether they are in a book, or are our own stories. It’s essential for me to have a variety of reading options in my classroom library, but also for the room and reading space to be inviting.

We need a variety of books because my students all have different backgrounds, interests, and reading abilities.

I am interested in primarily non-fiction or biographical texts which will help my students see many ways people come to have experiences and stories they share. I also have a need for books in Spanish and dyslexic-friendly texts. Having books that are accessible to a wide variety of abilities allows my students to find something to read now, and to grow into other books as they gain new skills and confidence.

While it’s important for me to have a variety of options in my classroom library, it’s also a priority for the room and reading area to be inviting so students want to spend time there. The fluffy rug and motivational wall art will help create a space where the students can really relax and get into their chosen books. The sensory items will allow those students that need to keep moving a quiet way to do that while reading.
