Help me give my students Sit-Upon seats so that they can sit on the carpet comfortably during shared reading and buddy reading centers. Classroom supplies are a must to start the year right!
My students are from an impoverished community in which resources, adequate parental involvement, and academic learning doesn't come naturally. While these students are in our school, we work our hardest to instill a good work ethic, a positive growth mindset, and pride in producing connections in the classroom, and connections to staff members that they can trust and go to when they need extra support. Often times, we have the resistant learner and the frustrated child that fails to see us as their ally and advocate. On the other hand, the learning that I've witnessed in all of my classes this year for some students has been heartwarming, and extremely uplifting to both me and the students.
These children have almost everything going against them but they are resilient!
Their underachievement has not been all because of them. Their circumstances have defined their situation. Negative behaviors get in the way of the learning process, but for many I've noticed better coping strategies and problem solving skills developing. They love to work with hands-on activities and benefit greatly from exposure to different role models, resources, and experiences. I want their school experience to be the best!
My Project
Help me give my students the learning tools that all students need to succeed while they are in my classroom. I cannot explain the countless times that my students haven't had the basic essentials needed to come to school ready to learn. After multiple trips to Walmart, Target, and CVS, my classroom budget is depleted. My students need crayons, glue sticks, colored pencils, and we need comfortable cushions for sitting on the floor. Students should be provided with the same learning tools and environments that all students in neighboring districts receive. These children do not have the basics and it seems unfair that they should be penalized for not having them when they are a necessity!
Time after time pencils aren't available, erasers are far and few between, and the pencil sharpener isn't working.
What message does this send to these children? They are deserving of standard items. Learning is already a struggle for them in an impoverished school system. We need to offer the core needs to children who have such a tough time learning.
We spend a lot of time doing Shared Reading, Independent Reading, and Centers on the floor. The kids are uncomfortable and restless. The floor has a very thin area carpet providing no cushion. They would find the learning process more enjoyable if they felt comfortable. This concept is true for us as adults. The cushions would be so beneficial to my students this school year!
