My Students

As a special education teacher, I get to work with a wide variety of individuals. My students come from all types of backgrounds and with many different exceptionalities, from autism, to learning disabilities, to brain disorders, and more. It is a dynamic group and each person in the classroom has something to offer every other person.

Teaching these students from 6th-8th grade allows me to watch them grow and gives me the great privilege of being a part of their development as learners and as citizens.

My Project

We are dreaming big for our classroom. We are in a very old building with a unique set of challenges. We can't change the room we are in but we can change what is inside. Studies and anecdotes alike show that traditional desk and chair and notes and lectures aren't reaching students. They aren't engaging enough. That goes double for students like ours.

We want to make learning and coming to school something the students look forward to instead of something they resent.

We can do this by having a classroom that encourages collaboration, hands on activities, and movement. We are asking for a new set of furniture for our students so that they engage more in the classroom and with the curriculum. And also so they feel like they matter and we are working hard for their comfort and success.
