Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
The sensory tools, fidgets, and flexible seating options I’ve requested will play a crucial role in supporting my students’ ability to focus, regulate emotions, and engage fully in the classroom. Many of my students are new to this country and have experienced trauma, loss, or significant life transitions. These challenges often show up in ways that impact their ability to concentrate, feel safe, or stay emotionally grounded during the school day.
Sensory tools and fidgets provide a quiet, non-disruptive way for students to release stress and manage anxiety.
For example, a student who is overwhelmed by the noise and pace of the classroom can use a fidget to stay calm and focused during a lesson. Others may use sensory items as part of a calming routine before or after a difficult transition, such as entering a new environment or engaging in language-intensive tasks.
Flexible seating—like wobble stools, floor cushions, or balance balls—gives students the ability to choose what feels most comfortable and supportive to their bodies. It also supports students who may struggle with sitting still for long periods, offering movement without distraction.
These resources will help create a sensitive classroom where students feel safe, understood, and ready to learn. When their sensory and emotional needs are met, they are far more able to focus on developing English skills, participating in group activities, and building relationships with their peers. Ultimately, these tools are more than just classroom supplies—they are bridges to belonging, stability, and academic growth for some of the most courageous and resilient young people I’ve had the honor to teach.
