Comfort & Calm: A Cozy Chair for Student Counseling

My Project

High school students face a wide range of academic pressures, social dynamics, and personal challenges. In my role as a school counselor, I support students working through stress, anxiety, identity exploration, family difficulties, grief, and more. My office is a place where they come to talk openly and find support, sometimes in moments of crisis, and sometimes for quiet reflection.

Comfort is more than a luxury in a counseling setting—it’s a tool.

When students feel physically at ease, they are better able to emotionally engage. A thoughtfully designed space helps build trust, reduces anxiety, and supports deeper conversations.

I’m requesting a comfortable, cushioned armchair to make my high school counseling office more inviting and therapeutic. Right now, students sit in a stiff, uncomfortable plastic chair during our sessions. That kind of environment doesn’t exactly encourage openness or ease.

These students are thoughtful, resilient, and trying their best in a world that often feels overwhelming. They deserve a space that respects their need for comfort and confidentiality.

A soft, cozy chair would help create a more welcoming, calming atmosphere—one that signals to students: This is a safe space. You matter here.

This chair will be used by students every day in one-on-one and small-group counseling sessions. It’s a small addition that will make a big impact.
