This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students in my classroom are a vibrant, joyful, and truly outstanding group of little people with special needs. All of the students in my class require a high level of care, both medical and educational, due to the severity of their individual exceptionalities. The students I work with range in grades from 6th-8th grade. They all attend an AMAZING center-based school for students with medical fragilities.

All of my students require the use of a wheelchair or other adaptive mobility equipment to move about their space and many of them have significant orthopedic and/or cognitive impairments that make everyday tasks extremely difficult.

80% of my students are non-verbal but they show their true colors in a million other ways from their smiles, to their laughter, or their mischevious personalities. I'm so excited to submit this project because it will truly help them be comfortable and engaged throughout their academic day.

My Project

My students have a variety of significant orthopedic impairment and they all require the use of adaptive mobility equipment and/or wheelchairs. Being in a wheelchair or in a adaptive stander can get really tiresome. A portion of our day we get the students out of their chairs and place them on something more comfortable to stretch out and relax while listening to a story or watching a lesson.

Having beanbag chairs would be incredibly helpful in giving my students more comfort and freedom to move around unrestricted in a safe and cozy environment.

The adaptive switches and document camera would all be used during this "down time" to give the students some fun, leisurely choice time as well as making storybook illustrations much larger and able to be seen from their comfortable seats while the story is read to them.
