Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is a small school making a big difference for students who have been placed in our building for various personal or private reasons. Many of them do not have "typical" experiences prior to entering the school system. Here, they receive additional resources and opportunities such as a smaller class size, as well as strategies for social and emotional learning in addition to academic skills.

My students come to school with many concerns outside of their control, so in our classroom we utilize teamwork and social skills to the fullest potential.

Thanks to our small school size, elementary teachers are able to mentor the middle and high school students 2-3 times a week. The older students form bonds with staff and younger students who look up to them as role models. Our school is working on increasing personal connections to strengthen academic and attendance data as well as give the students more opportunities for positive interactions that will help them be more successful.

My Project

Our school is in a district where over 50% of high schoolers have chronic absenteeism. Our school's current data shows 73% of our population at risk. They skip school and often become disengaged at school due to falling behind in classwork. When discussing the question "How was your weekend?" with students recently, they heard about escape rooms. Only one classmate had gone to an escape room adventure and the rest were very interested in learning more, responding with "let's do that Miss!"

Students will work together to solve puzzles and create similar mysteries involving clues and artwork for themselves and the younger students at our school.

Our high schoolers enjoy meaningful arts & crafts. They love to create poster board displays, bulletin boards for the hallway, and artwork for the district shows. This project will allow students to connect with each other and staff in ways that enhance their skills as artists and thinkers. They'll learn new skills with woodworking tools to create clues on wood which are a long lasting, new medium. The mysteries will use lock boxes, hidden compartments and cyphers.

Ideally, this project will increase attendance rates by giving students who normally play video games on the weekends more motivation to improve via a chance to play games of a different sort at school. The project will increase relationships with their non-homeroom teachers as well as middle and elementary school students. With stronger relationships, we expect students to gain a sense of confidence & leadership in helping others learn. We hope that the high schoolers will feel accomplished when others complete a puzzle that they've designed and attend school more often to create more challenges and artwork.
