Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Our dancers are participating in a World Dance Group. They are learning dances from the Asian and Pacific Islands to perform for Asian Pacific American Heritage month in May.
They are learning "Tinikling", which is a traditional Philippine folk dance which originated during the Spanish colonial era.
The dance involves people beating, tapping, and sliding bamboo poles on the ground to a beat while dancers' step over and in between the poles in a dance.
The props and attire will help bring authenticity to this dance style. Using the bamboo sticks and wearing the colorful cummerbunds and floral head pieces will give them a uniform look as they present this dance form at our culminating event in May.
Our goal is to educate our dancers and their audience to dance styles from around the world. Tinikling is a unique style of dance, and our dancers only have 10 lessons in which to learn this difficult folk dance. However, they always rise to the challenge and put on an amazing performance at the end of the year for their families, teachers and classmates.
