My Students

Our school serves many low-income/high poverty students who are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. We strive to give students opportunities to better and further support our students social and emotional growth. Our school currently enrolls 724 students, 85% African American (many from East Africa), 5% Native American, 7% White American, 1% Hispanic American, and 1% Asian American. Further, 90% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch status, 58% receive English language services, and 13% are homeless and/or highly mobile.

My Project

A committee of teachers and parents are working to organize the 3rd annual carnival at ASCC. Our student population consists of many new immigrants and many of our students have not had a “typical-American elementary” experience with school traditions such as Valentine’s Day boxes and card exchanges, school dances, and school carnivals. Many of the Minneapolis schools host carnivals, and assisting Sullivan in this endeavor will provide our students and families with the same opportunities as their peers in other Minneapolis schools. Given the income level of our families, all students attending will receive 10 free tickets and a free meal ticket. Our goal is to continue to make the carnival accessible to all families at Sullivan regardless of income. Sullivan is a Title I School and is only able to use those funds for academic purposes. Your support would help us provide a family-friendly carnival with traditional prizes for students to win at the games.
