Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students live in a community that is not always so nice and inviting, so it would be great for them to have a stimulating and comfortable place to learn and relax.
My students are 4-6 year old kindergarten children who live in a low socio-economic urban community.
The majority of students are English language learners. They are great kids, but many times have to deal with difficult situations in their lives. Though our school may not be located in a great area, we work hard to give our students an inviting place to learn and experience new and memorable things and an opportunity for a better life.
My Project
I am requesting materials to create a more welcoming environment in our classroom. Currently, our classroom has an old library carpet that is both run-down and dingy. Our class puppets are stuffed into a box. The new carpet with the colorful ocean scene would invite students to come and sit down with a good book. Other students would be able to use the comfy beanbag or seat cushions to read or participate in other learning activities elsewhere in the room.
The puppet stand would make our classroom puppets more accessible and visible. Students would be inspired to use their imaginations during dramatic play or simply pick one up to use as a buddy to read to. Finally, the write and wipe picture frame cards would add a more personal touch to the classroom. Each student would have their own picture display card and mini-bio to make them feel included. These frame cards also serve as a great way to get to know each other, and can be used for interactive or shared writing lessons.
For most students, this is their first school experience and all of these materials help to form a safe and happy classroom environment.
They create a colorful and comfy atmosphere, which would welcome and engage all students. They would feel included, relaxed, and most importantly, READY TO LEARN!
