Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Most of my students live below poverty level. Many of them have one parent or live with non-parental family members. Many live in high stress homes. For many, English is not their home language. Some of them rely on pubic assistance for food and healthcare. Many of my children get themselves up, dressed, and to the bus stop without parental help or support. School lunch and breakfast may be the most nutritious meals of the day.

Yet...my students thrive in class.

They love to come to school. They feel safe and loved. We hug on them, listen to them, and comfort them. Most importantly, we teach them. BUT, it is hard to teach when you don't have the supplies needed to provide a meaningful learning experience.

My Project

My students need a new carpet to be comfortable while they are leaning in the classroom. We use our carpet for multiple reasons throughout the day including large group times, various small group times, and even individual work. It is the main focal point in my classroom.

The new carpet will provide an inviting place for my students to gather.

The carpet we currently have is old, stained, and frayed around the edges. It has been used for many years and is impossible to keep clean and sanitary. This past year it sat rolled up in the gym unable to be used because of COVID. My students had to stay at their desks the whole day. They were often bored and tired of sitting in one place. It was extremely obvious how valuable a carpet is to an early childhood classroom to learning and focus.
