I have had the pleasure of being our fabulous school district's elementary school guidance counselor for many years. Throughout the years I have carried many roles with this title, but my favorite role is working with our amazing students. Our school houses over 400 students in grades preschool through fourth. Many of them come to our school lacking social and emotional skills. In addition to that, many of them come to school on a daily without their basic needs being met. It is, without doubt, the most rewarding job I could have ever asked for to be able to assist and help these students, as well as all of the students in my district.
Over 70% of our students come from low-income households, but that does not stop them from being some of the most friendly, positive, and hardworking students.
Throughout the day, I am able to work with the students helping them to enroll, get acquainted with the school, offer them guidance and support in terms of academic, personal, parental, and social pressures, as well as advocate for their well being. In addition to that, I get help students process problems and plan goals of action.
I have amazing students who have a deep desire to do well academically as well as socially, but many of them come into school not equipped with healthy ways to navigate life, stress, overwhelming emotions and peers. I passionately believe in focusing on the whole child and helping them grow into the healthy adult they deserve to be in life! I want them to reach their full potential!
So many times in our sessions we discuss healthy ways to cope and handle the stress that life can present.
During our time together we utilize stress relieving items like stress balls, putty, and figit devices. Many of my students, no matter what the age love to build with legos as they talk and open up and share. We even talk about how building with legos is very calming and can be a great way to deescalate when stressed!
I want my students to have a few new coping strategies in their "tool box" that are healthy ways to express their feelings!
