Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

¡Hola! As an elementary teacher in a dual language program, I proudly celebrate Latino culture every day through bilingual education. My vibrant students come from diverse backgrounds; some are native Spanish speakers, others are Spanish learners, and about 60% qualify for Free or Reduced-Price Lunch benefits.

It is important to link social-emotional book-based learning with art activities like designing T-shirts with positive phrases that encourage students to express themselves freely.

Second graders are at a key developmental stage for forming self-concept and understanding positive peer relationships, making early social-emotional learning both timely and transformative. At seven and eight years old, children are actively moving beyond egocentric play to build a clearer sense of personal identity and learn how their actions impact the classroom community. By engaging in this hands-on project with fabric markers, a toss-and-catch set, and Play-Doh, students receive a tangible, empowering way to express who they are through personalized T-shirts, using colors, symbols, and self-affirming words to showcase their unique strengths.

Reading bilingual books together enriches this process by giving students an inclusive, accessible context to identify emotions in characters before turning inward to articulate their own shirt affirmations.

Uniting creative self-expression and story-driven literacy with tactile mindfulness tools not only helps young learners recognize their own self-worth and manage daily stress, but also fosters a deep sense of empathy, belonging, and lasting unity among classmates as they wear their creations together.
