This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My fifth grade kiddos are eager and curious to make a positive impact in our community. They’d love to give back to people within our school community who are less fortunate by providing community service while donating nonperishable food and snacks through a student-created pantry. They’d be in charge of receiving and storing packages, organizing the pantry, and advertising that the food will be available to all students in the school community who would like a snack. Before and after school, the kiddos would cart the snacks throughout the halls.

The kiddos would make it their mission to fight food insecurities.

Creating a pantry where we presently have an existing refrigerator in which we store leftover cafeteria breakfast and lunch items daily would be ideal. Students will use the requested plates and plasticware to serve these items, and the wipes and garbage bags for easy cleanup.

This experience will teach my students how important it is to give back to others when there is an opportunity to give back. The requested plastic bins and rolling utility cart will be used for storage and easy transportation throughout our hallways.

Again, the overall vision for this project is to have students create a fully stocked pantry for distribution to those in need, whether within our classroom and in our school community. I feel it is never too early to teach students about giving back and taking action to support a cause that will make this world a better place. Food insecurity is a real issue, and it would bring my students great joy to provide these resources to those in need. I hope this will encourage my students to always think about others and have empathy for those who are less fortunate.
