My Project
Hunger is a significant barrier to learning for many students in Pittsburgh’s East End neighborhoods, including Homewood, Larimer, East Hills, Lincoln–Lemington–Belmar, and Wilkinsburg. In these communities, where poverty rates are high, many students face food insecurity both at home and at school. With approximately 70% of children in Homewood living in poverty, and Wilkinsburg’s child poverty rate at 30.8%, hunger is a daily struggle for many students, preventing them from reaching their full academic potential.
At Pittsburgh Westinghouse Academy, we know that when students are hungry, they are distracted, unable to focus, and struggle to engage in learning.
Research has shown that children who experience hunger are less likely to retain information, participate in class, or excel academically. This is especially true for our students who face multiple challenges, such as homelessness and instability at home.
To help alleviate this barrier to learning, we are seeking support through DonorsChoose to provide daily snacks for our students. By ensuring that every child has access to nutritious snacks throughout the day, we can reduce the distractions caused by hunger and give students the energy they need to focus on their education. This simple act of providing food will have a lasting impact on their academic performance, emotional well-being, and overall school experience.
