I teach eighth-grade science in a small, rural Tennessee town. We are in a high poverty area, and many of my students do not always have the same opportunities as students in urban areas.
My students are inquisitive, eager to learn and love new challenges!
Our new curriculum is project based and enables all students to work at their own pace through the required work. Progress is monitored through checkpoints, and students can easily see how they are progressing through their 8th grade work.
We have 'mini' lessons during the week which I base on student curiosities and demonstrate science concepts we are learning or reviewing.
As a teacher, it is my responsibility to expand my students' horizons. Providing them with activities that stretch their brains and provide them with a challenge will motivate and engage my students.
My Project
We are studying physics this year and our first project involves understanding how a potential asteroid collision would affect the Earth.
My students need assorted balls and marbles in different sizes, materials and mass to experiment with and enable them to understand how these different characteristics affect the strength of a collision.
Providing my students with these physical materials will enable them to experiment with collisions under different circumstances and conditions. In addition to the practical application, students love to play with marbles! Science class is an opportunity for students to move about the classroom and become more actively engaged in lessons.
