Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My high school students are eager to learn ceramics, work with their hands and carry their curiosity and creativity out in the world.
I have students that have really taken to working with clay and have been using a lot of supplies exploring different techniques.
However this year my school is still facing hard times, because of this I was unable to buy as many underglazes and glazes for them to use this year. I encourage a lot of free choice in assignments and my students have really enjoyed being able to explore a wide variety of materials and techniques.
My Project
Amaco velvet underglazes will help my students to fully communicate their ideas about how identity can be perceived based on our outward appearances. Students will use underglazes to paint on "clothes" onto their ceramic sculptures.
Students will create self-portrait bust out of clay that shows how they believe others perceive them from outwards appearance.
Students learn about how artist Patti Warashina and David Kenton Kring incorporate identity into their artwork.
Adolescents are concerned about how they appear to others but need to integrate their own identities, desires, and skills with what is perceived to be acceptable. (Kerlavage 1998, p.61).
