My Students

I am an elementary Life Skills teacher in a high poverty school. All of my students receive free breakfast and lunch. We currently have four Life Skills classes in our building. There are over 40 students with a wide range of physical and developmental disabilities including Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, sensory or visual impairment, and Autism. Our students require all academics to be modified, and they access the curriculum through a variety of methods.

We have a big goal this year...to create a multi-sensory learning center for all the classes to use.

This therapeutic room will allow children who are non-ambulatory to get out of their wheelchairs and explore materials safely. Students with limited vision will be able to access the light stimulation they require. Cause and effect activities will also be readily available for students working on those skills. Students with behavioral challenges can also use this room as a calming environment or for reinforcement.

My Project

Teaching students of varying needs and abilities is challenging, but teaching students of varying needs and abilities remotely during a pandemic is difficult. My students require individual, in-person attention so working remotely with this population has given my concept of “direct instruction” a whole new meaning. During this crisis, my goal remains how best to find resources to help support remote learning and maintain connections academically and emotionally while ensuring all students are supported while away from school. Providing colorful visuals will help my students remain engaged and enthusiastic about learning.

If the COVID-19 virus continues to keep students out of school, the need for creative approaches to meeting the needs of students with special needs will become increasingly important.

Students with special needs often require and benefit from visual schedules and visual materials in general. These materials will not only help provide routine and a sense of normalcy to a child’s life during a very abnormal time but will also help them know what to expect.

One of the most fundamental strategies for a classroom of students with autism, as well as any other special needs, is the use of visuals. Visual supports serve two main purposes for children who have autism spectrum disorders: they help parents communicate better with their child, and they help their child communicate better with others. Please help me provide a color printer that will enable me to produce visual aids that can be sent home, used during daily remote learning lessons, and ultimately used in the classroom when life-as-we-knew-it resumes.
