Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are hard workers who always want to do their best. In first grade, many students still rely on artwork to show their learning. Providing my students with crayons, markers, and colored pencils in diverse skin tones will significantly enrich their learning experiences.
When students have access to crayons, markers, and colored pencils in a variety of skin tones, they are better able to represent themselves and others accurately in their artwork.
Students currently have to choose between brown and peach, and those two colors alone do not represent my students.
In addition, using these art supplies during literacy and SEL activities will enhance their understanding and empathy. For example, when reading stories about characters from different backgrounds, students can draw illustrations that reflect the characters' true appearances. By creating art that mirrors the real world, my students will develop a greater appreciation for individual differences and learn to celebrate the unique qualities that make each person special.
