This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I teach at a low income alternative high school in Greeley, Colorado. My students traditionally are behind in credits and have had very little success in school. Many of them have special educational needs. I teach math and because of that, most of my students hate me before they even meet me. They walk in on day one carrying this huge chip on their shoulder. I try to do anything and everything to make my classroom and my class be as welcoming and as successful as possible. My students deserve to feel successful!

Colors help students remember!

I've taught for 26 years and it seems silly, but, it's true! I can reference back to "that blue packet" or "that pick note catcher" and the kids remember it better! They retain the information more. The colors make learning easier and my kids need learning to be as accessible as possible. As soon as they feel just an ounce of success I've got them hooked! And suddenly the Pythagorean Theorem or factoring a quadratic doesn't seem all that scary anymore.
