My Students

Kindergarteners love seeing new words highlighted in their stories. High schoolers are no different. I want to engage teenagers the same way we engage the youngsters, with creativity and vivid expression. Colored pens and markers are a simple way to make Latin jump off the page.

My high school is in a "highly urban area" and is what most people would call a magnet school.

We are a public school so we enroll students from all over the city, but being a public school we are also critically underfunded. As a matter of fact, we are the least funded high school in the city. Most of our students, according to the federal guidelines, are poor but their enthusiasm and potential are limitless. We have a 100% college acceptance rate and consistently rank in the top tier in our state. We are successful but short on supplies.

My Project

Something as simple as color can brighten up even the dustiest of subjects. I teach Latin to teenagers. They constantly ask "why do I need to know this." I joyously tell them. But the text is printed in black and white. My job is to make it come alive. I ask for your assistance. When I project the text onto my whiteboard, I use color to illustrate particular points of Latin grammar (ablative absolute, indirect statement, etc.). I have the students color code their notes and homework corrections. Such a simple act engages their creative minds. I also use a modern version of the centuries' old wax tablet. I have mini whiteboards (18" x 18") upon which students write the answers to Jeopardy-like questions. When they have the correct answer, they jot it down and raise their mini whiteboards up high for all to see. It's a fun exercise but it eats up markers at an alarming rate.

Today's students hear many Siren songs in their lives.

I am competing with smart phones, smarter TVs, and all forms of fast and flashy media. By making a dusty language more than a black-and-white text, I can engage my students so that they can literally see the clauses and phrases. I use different color fonts in my presentations so that the students can see a contrast between the main and subordinate clauses.
