Coloring Our Way To Becoming Effective Scientists!

My students need colored pencils in order to enhance their interactive Science notebook activities. Research shows that the brain retains information seen in color.

My Students

Tracy Reese once said, "I'm crazy for color. Color embraces you. It wakes you up and keeps you present." My project embodies this quote. Implementing the use of colored pencils regularly in my classroom will assist my students in staying fully present, which leads to effective learning.

I teach eighty adventurous Sixth Grade students at a Title I Middle School in Upstate South Carolina!

We are proud to be a Title I School! I teach four classes of students of all learning levels and styles. I am proud of the hard work and progress that my energetic Sixth Graders have made thus far this school year! They make me smile and laugh each day! I am so lucky to be their Science teacher!

My Project

My students love Science experiments! In order to get to these Science experiments, we usually take some form of notes in order to understand the experiment we are about to complete. Most of these anecdotes are recorded through the drawing of diagrams and descriptive illustrations. Most of the time, the students do not get to color these drawings due to lack of materials. If I had a class set of colored pencils for each of my four classes, each class could take pride in their very own box of assorted colored pencils. This would give my students a sense responsibility, ownership, and pride in addition to enhancing their learning. My students would be able to complete more activities that involve color. I believe that the regular use of the colored pencils will lead to more effective learning in my classroom as studies show that seeing information in color assists the brain in retaining information.

The donation of these colored pencils will improve our daily work in our classroom!

My students will take extra pride in their hard work when they see that it is enhanced with color. These materials would strengthen our classroom community by creating a new sense of responsibility and a comfortable, sharing environment. I will have classroom helpers who keep track of the pencils. Ultimately, the possession of the pencils will help my students better themselves as learners and community members!
