Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students live in a small community in a high poverty area which, due to the proximity to Mexico, allows them to maintain a connection with their roots and family members.
They all participate in the free lunch program and are English language learners.
They face many challenges such as poverty, lack of motivation and language barriers among other things.
Many families in this community struggle financially. Some parents cannot provide their children with the basic school supplies. This makes my students more appreciative of the materials we receive.
My Project
During math and science I ask my students to illustrate and explain their thinking in pictures and words. Having color pens will allow the students to express their answers in an artistic way. In science the students often do projects that require illustrations and the color pens would add that spark of their personality and help their projects to stand out. This will also benefit my English language learners to express their thinking, not only with words but with pictures. Having color pens will benefit my students in many ways, but more importantly it will add fun and excitement to their work.
