Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students live in a large, urban city and attend a large, spanned school with seven periods. All of the transitions, large classes, and large community can lead to a sense of anonymity.
I make sure I learn everyone's name the first day of class and greet students at the door each day, by name.
Part of this individualization of education is the weekly grade report. I ensure I have graded all of their classwork and then provide them with a print out each Friday of the week's work and their overall grade.
My Project
Not everyone learns the same way and coloring for content addresses this need to differentiate. You may have heard of reading for content where students read a text to learn an idea. In my Biology classes, we look at the content from another angle, a coloring diagram. Students explore scientific concepts such as energy flow, characteristics of life, and the kelp forest ecosystem through both reading and diagramming. As students color a diagram that explains the content, they are reinforcing the information presented in the text. My ESL students particularly appreciate this approach and will often complete the diagram first and then delve into the vocabulary rich text.
In order to facilitate this type of learning, students need their own set of sharp colored pencils.
I am requesting a set of Sargent Art colored pencils, a sharpener, and a pencil pouch for each student in a class period. This way each student can have their own, complete, sharpened set of colored pencils before they begin the assignment. Beginning the assignment with these supplies in place will allow students to engage quickly and effectively.
Additionally, I am requesting Huggies Baby Wipes to clean our work areas. A clean workspace encourages students to focus and sends the message that you, their teacher, and their peers care about their success by providing the tools and the labor to make it happen.
